Central Bank Digital Currencies: The Israeli Case

On April 17, The Bank of Israel Steering Committee on the Potential Issuance of a Digital Shekel published a press release on potential scenarios for deciding to issue a digital shekel.

On June 15, we invite Yoav Soffer, Advisor to the Deputy Governor and CBDC Project Manager at the Bank of Israel to discuss this.

In this Breakout Bites session, titled “Central Bank Digital Currencies: The Israeli Case”, we will explore the Bank of Israel's activities related to CBDCs, and more specifically the digital Shekel (SHAKED).

Participants will learn about the motivations behind the development of a CBDC in Israel, including the country's financial inclusion challenges and its desire to enhance its payment systems.

Attendees will gain insight into the challenges and opportunities of CBDC implementation, as well as the potential implications for the Israeli financial landscape.

The session will also delve into Project Icebreaker, a joint effort between the Bank of Israel and various private sector entities to explore the potential of a digital shekel.

The session is under Chatham House rules, so make sure you join us, and share your questions and vision with the rest, because by sharing, we all end up understanding the wonderful world of finance a bit better.
